Chapter 4
The Rose

Vienna sneezed as she stumbled through the court yard.  She had caught a cold from lying in the mud out in the rain.  It really was no surprise to her but now she felt like the living dead.  Stumbling from class to class, the constant sneezing and sniffling on top of everyone calling her mud girl (not a very creative name but it hurt nonetheless).  Now she figured she would find a nice peaceful place to rest her eyes for a bit before she had her last and final class.  She was going to need all the rest she could get as her Biological Chemistry partner was an idiot who did nothing but sneakily eat candy bars all class.  In other words, she was the one doing all the work.
Just as she was in the clearing, the pond in sight, she ran into someone. Both of them tumbled to the ground, exchanging surprised groans as the struggled to get up.
"You need to watch where you're going, strawberry." Grumbled the blonde gardener she had ran into countless times. Only this time it was of the literal context. He held out his hand for her, not in the least upset. "You okay?"
Vienna shook her head and stood up by herself, "Yeah, I'm fine.  Sorry about that, Gardener." she brushed herself off then took out a handkerchief to blow her nose.
"Sheesh, you sound terrible. How'd you catch a cold this time of year?" He teased her.
She frowned, "I was pushed into the mud by some kid and I stayed there.  All day and half way into the night…it was raining…"
His smile vanished, realizing how cruel his tease must've been. "I'm sorry. Want me to beat up the kid?"
"No it's my fault.  I told the guy to grow a pair…and then he told me to lose my pair…so I guess he and I are even." Vienna frowned and looked away, embarrassed.
The gardener's eyebrow lifted, "Oh, is that so? In that case… yeah, you both are pretty even. I mean, if he doesn't have a pair and you have a pair… you sort of complete him, don't you?" He laughed softly. "Sorry, that was out of turn."
She frowned even more, "Thanks for helping my self esteem, I'm going to go find someplace to do my homework now." she brushed past him and headed toward the library.
"Hey, wait." He called her back. "One thing before you speed off. What's your name?"
She shrugged, "What's your name?"
"I asked you first." He answered swiftly.
"Doesn't matter.  I'm a lady. " she shot back.
He smiled and gave her a decent gentlemanly bow. "Of course, how rude of me to not remember my manners in the presence of a refined lady." The remarkable thing was that he said this completely seriously. "I'm Victor. And you are?"
"Hm…you got a last name or are you like Madonna?"
"I don't think I can sing like her, so, yes I have a last name. The name's Fluke. Victor Fluke."
Vienna nodded then glanced down at her watch, "Okay Mr. Fluke, I'm Vienna Madrid."
"Vienna Madrid… What a lovely name for a lovely woman." He took her hand and kissed the back of it. "It's nice to meet you."
She blushed and quickly tugged her hand from his, "Now, if that's all, I need to do my homework."
"Of course." Victor's eyes darkened slightly, fixated on the pink of her cheeks. "I'll find you another time. Or are you going to run into me again?"
"Hopefully not Mr. Fluke." she sighed, "See ya." with that she turned and headed toward the library.

Vienna drummed her pencil against her notebook.  She couldn't focus on her homework at all.  This was all because of that gardener, Victor.  He was so nice to her and he was so handsome.  "Hm…" she purred and she doodled little hearts on her paper.  Her eyes darted down to the hand he had kissed, his lips had touched her skin, and they were so soft-"Stop!" she suddenly growled to herself, "He's the gardener!  Get a hold of yourself!" she scolded in a strained whisper.
Why was she thinking about him, a couple hours ago she wasn't even interested in him.  Her eyes grew sad as she considered that he may not even be interested in her.  He probably wasn't.  She might as well save herself the embarrassment of asking again.  In the end Vienna decided to brush off the small crush that had formed.  Why bother with something if it's not a sure thing.  And Vienna was certainly not a risk taker.
"You seem deep in thought." Spoke an attractive voice by her ear.
She jumped a good two feet out of her seat, "What are you doing here?"
Victor smiled brightly, simply loving how adorable her surprised gestures were. "I came to give you something. To help get your mind off the cold." His eyes drifted to the small blush on her cheeks that had formed just moments after his surprising appearance.
She blushed even more as she considered that he might give her a kiss, "O-oh…?  Well…okay…" she smiled shyly and looked away hoping her breath didn't smell.
Bringing his arms from behind him, he held up a small, velvety pink rose barely unfolding its petals. There were tiny drops of dew, showing that it was certainly plucked fresh from his very own garden. "This is for you. I'm sure it fits your name just nicely."
She blushed even more, and gently took the rose from his hand, "Th-thank you….Mr. Fluke…"
As her hand was occupied with the rose he took this opportunity to give it one more kiss for today. "Please, let's leave the formalities behind. Call me Victor."
"Kay. V-Victor." her blush was terrible now as she began to quickly gather her things.
His lips turned into a cruelly elegant smile. "It's my pleasure, Vienna. I have to get back to work. Be sure to visit me any time." There was a bit of darkness in his eye that only made him seem… dangerous. "Have a good day." He turned and left, feeling quite satisfied with himself.
She nodded and sat down slowly, "H-he's probably just a really nice guy.  Yeah…he doesn't…he's not…yeah." she frowned and slammed her head down on the library desk.
It was a little harder to work one her homework, thoughts of Victor distracting her. She ended up wasting valuable time, the library closing in an hour. Students were already gathering up their things and leaving, especially one in particular. Ryo stopped at her desk, unnoticed by her busy self. He took a moment to gather up his courage. He was going to apologize and say he was completely out of line. That was what he had decided the previous night when he had been particularly mean. It wasn't his place to let out his frustration in such a destructive manner.
"… Hey…" He spoke softly. When she didn't hear him the first time he cleared his throat and said it once more, "Hey."
"Hm…" she looked up from her text book and frowned, "Oh, it's you.  Come to dismember me, Conan The Barbarian?"
"No." Ryo answered in disgust. Dismemberment wasn't his forte`. "I just… wanted to say… about yesterday…" He reached behind him and scratched at his head, a nervous reaction. "I'm… sorry."
After a long moment of silence Vienna broke out into laughter, "So, you actually think that after all the bruises cuts and colds a simple 'I'm sorry' was going to cut it?"
"No." He was insulted by her laughter. "It's a start."
"What do you want, Asakura, a medal?  I don't forgive you, but lovely performance." Sarcasm coated her every word.
A vein throbbed visibly on his forehead. He reached out and pushed all her books on the floor. They clattered and wrinkled, the delicate order disrupted.
Vienna stood up instantly, "Pick those up, Asakura."
Ryo crossed his arms over his chest. "No."
"Yes." she hissed, "And here I thought you were a reformed man.  Prove to me that you're not still a delinquent and pick up the books you pushed off the table."
"I don't need to prove anything to a prissy princess." He ridiculed.
"You're the only princess here!"
"So you're saying you really are a boy? My, what a surprise."
"Do I look like a boy, stupid?!"
"With your lack of certain anatomy, yes."
She growled and stomped toward him, "Well since we're talking about lacking anatomy I guess there are a few things you're lacking as well!" she poked his pants.
He grabbed her wrist and held her away from him. "Your touch isn't wanted." He hissed. "I'm not into little boys."
"Don't worry, I was merely demonstrating a point, besides, I'm not into hairy older women!" she smirked triumphantly, "And you try to call yourself a man!  A man wouldn't pick on a girl like me!"
"You keep calling yourself a girl yet you fail to provide any evidence. You're case is cold." He sneered.
She growled and grabbed his hands forcing them on her chest, "Good enough for you?!"
There was a long silence between them. Ryo's cheeks slowly turned pink, as were Vienna's. Ryo's hands lightly groped what was obviously breasts before he tore himself away from her.
"I-I…" she shook her head, "Sorry.  I was caught up in the heat of the argument.  Please excuse me." with that she picked up her books from the floor and ran for the library door, "I don't wanna die today, I don't wanna die today…" she whispered under her breath as she rapidly approached the door.
He stood there, completely stunned, his hands still tingling with the feel of those soft lumps of flesh. Did she really just do that? He stared down at his hands before noticing a forgotten book. Scooping it up with ease he timidly called out to her, "You forgot a book!" And, not wanting to approach her he tossed the book.
Vienna turned at his voice and her nose broke. Blood trickling down her nostrils she looked down at the culprit, the book carrying tiny specks of red.  She wiped the blood from her lips and look up at Ryo, "You…hit me with a book…"
Ryo was just as stunned as she was. He shook his head, his tongue locked into place.
Vienna's eyes narrowed, "You hit me with a book." she snarled like a wild animal ready for the attack.
"It was an accident!" He tried to explain.
She dropped all of her books except for one in that instant, "No it wasn't.  You hate me.  Why wouldn't you want to hurt me just like everyone else?!" she threw the book at him though it whizzed a good two feet from his head, completely missing him.
He flinched at the loud thud the book made. He was willing to help her get to the nurse's office to look at her nose, but if she was just going to fling books at him for revenge he wasn't going to just sit back and let her. "I told you it was an accident, you lunatic!" He grabbed a novel from behind him and flung it at her.
It hit her square in the stomach, "Oof…" she fell to her knees gasping for air.
He let down his guard and slowly made his way towards her. "Will you stop attacking me now? You need to see the nurse."
"Get away from me." she hissed before pushing past him to retrieve the book she had thrown.
He let her retain the book, figuring that being nice now wasn't going to do much good. Blood had rushed all the way down her face and was currently staining the front of her uniform. She was going to pass out from blood loss if she didn't go take care of that broken nose right away. She was much too stubborn for Ryo to handle with a cool head.
She came back to where Ryo stood and gathered up the rest of her things before storming out, "Victor will help me."
Rushing was only making the bleeding worse. What was Vienna thinking? She had no idea where Victor even lived! For all she knew he didn't live on school grounds and was far away in his comfortable home. She was starting to feel light headed and dizzy, stumbling over her own feet when a strong arm came around her. Just when she had thought her luck was of the bad variety it proved her wrong. Victor's face came into focus, worry causing a few wrinkles on his forehead.
"You alright, strawberry? You're bleeding a lot." He brushed his hand across her cheek. "Hold on. I'm going to get you some help."
With ease, he lifted her into his arms bridal style and carried her into the University.
Ryo watched the gardener rush past him with the injured girl, a little confused and very irritated. That wouldn't have had to happen if she had let him help her. It was her own fault.
Vienna closed her eyes and spoke one word, "Asakura…"
